A neuroprotective dietary guide for the prevention of initiation and progression of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease in which devastating symptoms of deteriorating cognitive abilities appear and negatively affect the lives of the elderly and their caregivers. About 35.6 million people worldwide are currently living with dementia. Today, AD is the sixth leading cause of all deaths in the United States and is mainly due to AD health complications and various malnutrition factors. An effective prevention or treatment system is not yet available due to the complex neuropathological processes at work with AD, including chronic inflammation, microglia activation, and high levels of free radicals. These processes have been associated with beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibrilly tangles which are considered to be the main key features of AD neuropathology. The main purpose of this neuroprotective dietary guide is to promote dietary and lifestyle changes in order to improve nutrition, dietary intake, cognitive performance and brain function with the elderly population and AD sufferers.
